Asparagus.

Asparagus: Our first crop of the Spring and what a great way to start the season! Traditionally associated with Worcestershire, asparagus is well suited to our light, sandy soils. The flavour is renowned and is very popular with chefs throughout the land. An asparagus festival is held each year, based in Evesham, which culminates in an Asparagus Charity Auction held at the National Trust owned Fleece Inn, in Bretforton.

Asparagus is a member of the lily farm and unlike our other crops is a perennial plant. It takes at least two years to establish before harvesting commences. At Norchard we make our own forked asparagus knives by dividing combine harvester blades and welding them back together on the end of a metal rod with a wooden handle. The crop is grown in ridges and after harvest has finished for the season the asparagus fields are allowed to grow to fern for the rest of the Summer, allowing the roots to build up fuel for the next year's crop.

Harvest from St. George's Day (April 23rd) to Midsummer's Day (June 24th).
