Waitrose Award

At the Waitrose Farming Conference, Southalls of Norchard were presented with the Waitrose Environmental Sustainability Award for the Fresh Produce sector. I was given the trophy on stage by Rob Collins, the Waitrose MD, and it's great to know that our environmental work has been recognized with one of the most prestigious awards in the industry.

Nina Das Gupta from BBC Hereford and Worcester Radio called in at Norchard to tell the listeners about our pumpkin operation. While she was here Anna helped her to carve one of our Monster pumpkins. The result may not compete with the Presidents on Mount Rushmore but take a close look at the pic and see if there is bit of the present incumbent looking back at you. At the very least the hair and skin colour are spot on!

Halloween Harvest

Norchard Farm is mostly pumpkin orange right now. The fields and yard are full of Monsters, Carvers, Mediums, Cooking Pumpkins, Munchkins and Mixed Squash. We've got two selling weekends before All Hallows Eve and the schools have broken up for Half Term. Our husbandry has been almost too good this year; many of the Carver size have grown so big they are now classed as Monsters. Hopefully we can swap the sales around to make sure the crop is not wasted - we don't want too many left on November 1st!

Liz and Honor from the Soil Association brought 7 potential recruits into the Food Industry over to Norchard on Saturday. We had a good discussion on the career opportunities out there and how our business operates. We also found time to check out how the asparagus fern is looking.

This Bordered Beauty moth is well named indeed. Signs of Autumn now with passage migrant birds being seen on the farm. Wheatears and Stonechats, plus the first Redwings which will remain for the winter.
