Bean Salad and Bolly

Green Beans are really good for you - they are high in fibre, antioxidants and minerals. Eaten regularly they can help with weight management. Try serving them in a salad, like in the photo. Steam or boil the beans al dente then chill in iced water before adding to green leaves. Crusty bread, salad dressing and a glass of Bolly are optional but take some beating!

End of Planting Season

Tomorrow will see the end of our planting for this season. The last of the Purple Sprouting Broccoli (as seen in the pic) and Dwarf French Beans will be going in and we can then concentrate on irrigation and harvesting. The picking teams are really going for it now and we are about to split the pack house team into 2 shifts.

Great British Menu?

BBC 2's Great British Menu climaxed recently with a 'Taste of Summer' banquet held at Wimbledon. Throughout the show the judges complained quite rightly about the lack of vegetables used by the contestants. Come on chefs throughout the land  - as Anna is showing in the pic there is a great range of UK produce, including tasty fresh peas, beans, courgettes, onions available right now for you to create a taste of Summer.

Barcelona Wedding

The partners left the farm in capable hands to celebrate the wedding of Paul and Lindsay's son Tom to Jesy Santillan. A 15th century Spanish farmhouse near to Sitges proved the perfect wedding venue for friends and family who flew in from Dubai, the USA and the UK.

Great-Uncle Jack

On June 16th 1917 our Great-Uncle Jack died in the First World War. Although buried in France he has a plaque on the Southall family grave and, 100 years to the day later, his 9 Great-Nephews and Nieces gathered to remember him and toast him later at the Venture In restaurant in Ombersley. In a pencil-written letter sent from the front a few days before his fatal wounding Jack wrote to his mother how much he was looking forward to leave to be spent at Norchard.

Asparagus and Tomato Quiche

The Asparagus season will soon be over but there is still time to cook the sublime Broad Bean, Pea and Asparagus Rissotto whilst the 3 main ingredients are available fresh and local.

Broads

The farm is really starting to buzz now! We're harvesting Asparagus, Picking Peas, Sugar Snap Peas (delicious) and Broad Beans. Runner and Green Beans, plus Courgettes are only 2 - 3 weeks away and the Continental Onions are looking a picture. My pic shows some shelled broads - the ones on the right were drilled 1st November 2016 and we have just started picking them today. The slightly smaller ones on the left were drilled 70 days later but will follow on in less than a week. It's all about continuity and no gaps on the supermarket shelves!

Pepys’ Pease

On the 25th May 1662 Samuel Pepys wrote in his famous diary that "This day I had the first dish of pease I have had this year." At Southalls of Norchard, a mere 355 years later, we have just started to pick our early pea crop. I hope that Samuel's peas were as sweet as the ones I ate in the field today.
